FIC Report (Niger State) – Niger State Governor, farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago was part of the joint meeting of the Northern States Governors Forum and Northern Traditional Rulers Council, where a renewed call was made for the establishment of a state police to address the growing cases of insecurity, especially in the region.
The meeting, which was held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna, provided a platform where critical stakeholders from the region discussed issues affecting the region, especially the deepening cases of insecurity and ways to address them.
Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum and Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, who noted that the insecurity in the North has escalated from a localised challenge to a national threat, stressed that state policing remains a very critical and effective mechanism to address present security challenges.
He also observed that underdevelopment, illiteracy, weak infrastructure, high rates of unemployment, environmental degradation, and poor resource management, among other factors, gave rise to insecurity in the region and tasked the region’s leader to make every effort to reverse the trend.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership role, which led to the release of kidnapped victims in parts of the region, while urging him not to relent in ensuring all are released.
He said the region remains resolute to collaborate with the federal government, security agencies, and local authorities towards securing lives and property, including school environments.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani said the Northern States Governors have been evolving strategies, such as peer review mechanisms, aimed at providing good governance for the people.
He also acknowledged the critical role of the traditional institutions in nation-building and inculcating communal consciousness, among others, urging them to do more.
The Sultan of Sokoto, who doubles as Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Alh. Abubakar Sa’ad, assured the Northern Governors of the continued support of the Traditional Institutions in the region and urged them to ensure effective service delivery rooted in good governance.
The joint security meeting was attended by the 19 state governors, including first-class emirs and chiefs from the Northern Region.
