The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, extends warm congratulations to His Excellency Mohieldin Salem Ahmed Ibrahim, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan, as well as to the Government and people of Sudan, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the country’s Independence.
This milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on Sudan’s enduring journey as a sovereign nation, its rich cultural heritage, and the collective aspirations of its people for peace, unity, and prosperity. Independence Day stands as both a celebration of national self-determination and a reaffirmation of the values of freedom, dignity, and shared responsibility that continue to define Sudan’s national identity.
Nigeria acknowledges Sudan’s notable contributions to Africa’s political, intellectual, and cultural development, as well as the resilience of the Sudanese people in confronting complex political, economic, and humanitarian challenges.
Nigeria and Sudan share a long-standing relationship rooted in mutual respect, Pan-African solidarity, and a common commitment to Africa’s advancement. Shaped by shared anti-colonial experiences, both countries maintain a strong belief in Africa’s capacity to determine its own future. This shared outlook continues to guide bilateral relations and constructive engagement within regional and international platforms, including the African Union and the United Nations.
Nigeria commends Sudan’s continued engagement with regional and international partners in pursuit of peace, stability, and national cohesion, and reaffirms its support for inclusive governance, sustainable peace, and socio-economic recovery that reflect the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
As Sudan marks seven decades of independence, Nigeria expresses hope that the anniversary will serve as a catalyst for ending the war, renewed national consensus, reconciliation, and institutional strengthening. Nigeria also reiterates its readiness to deepen cooperation with Sudan in areas of mutual interest, including diplomacy, education, agriculture, trade, capacity building, and people-to-people exchanges, in line with commitments to South-South cooperation and African-led solutions.
On this special occasion, Nigeria extends heartfelt felicitations to the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan, the Government, and the entire Sudanese people, and wishes Sudan continued progress, peace, and success in the years ahead.
