ARMED FORCES DAY: Gov. Okpebholo Honours Nigeria’s Heroes, Urges Continued Dedication from Active Troops

FIC Report (Edo State) – In Commemoration of Armed Forces Day, Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has emphasized the urgent need for increased support and recognition for Nigeria’s Military Personnel and their families. Speaking at the Museum grounds in Oba Ovonramwen Square, Benin City, where the Annual 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration was held, Gov. Okpebholo paid tribute to the fallen heroes whose sacrifices have been instrumental in maintaining Nigeria’s Unity and Sovereignty.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor stated, “Today, we gather to honor our brave Soldiers who laid down their lives for the continued existence and unity of Nigeria. We pray that their souls rest in peace and that their families find strength in their loss. I call on those still in Active Service to dedicate themselves fully to their duties, confident that God will preserve Nigeria and honor those who have sacrificed everything for the nation.”

The event also saw calls from various Stakeholders for ongoing support for the Families of fallen Heroes. Umar Sheriffat, the State Coordinator of the Military Widows Association, urged the Government to extend sustained Assistance to Widows who lost their Spouses in Service. She appealed to Authorities to formally recognize these Women and provide them with empowerment opportunities, enabling them to care for their Children and rebuild their lives.

Additionally, retired Major Joe Koma highlighted the importance of better welfare for retired Military Personnel. He appealed to relevant Authorities to improve retirement benefits, emphasizing that such measures would motivate current personnel and honor their Sacrifices.

“We have given our all for Nigeria, and while pensions are paid regularly, an increase would go a long way in showing appreciation and support for those who have served,” Major Koma stated.

Overall, the event underscored the Nation’s gratitude to its Military Heroes and called for enhanced support for their families and retirees, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to honoring those who have dedicated their lives to the Country’s Peace and Security.
