FIC Report (Lagos State) – The Executive Director and CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr. Shaibu Husseini, has expressed concern over the promotion of tobacco, narcotics, and ritual practices in home videos, citing the damage it inflicts on viewers’ moral values and psyche.
Addressing students of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Acting Academy at the Board’s Lagos office, Dr. Husseini emphasized the need for clear disclaimers in fiction films, stating, “The future of Nollywood depends not only on creative excellence but also on regulatory discipline and cultural responsibility.”
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to balancing creative freedom with cultural sensitivity, adding, “No film should be distributed or exhibited in Nigeria without proper classification.”
Dr. Husseini announced plans to intensify enforcement, particularly on digital platforms, and urged filmmakers to comply with classification requirements. “The entire process can now be completed online, eliminating the need for physical visits,” he said.
The NFVCB is reintroducing online classification mechanisms and deploying the Magpie verification system to enhance transparency and compliance. Dr. Husseini clarified that the Board hasn’t banned money rituals in movies but expects such themes to be accompanied by disclaimers and consequences.
The visit aimed to expose students to film regulation, governance, and ethical compliance. Dr. Husseini outlined plans for stakeholder workshops, monetisation training, and legal compliance sessions to deepen industry development
