Meningitis: NIMET Issues Health Advisory To Sokoto, Kebbi, Other High Risk States

FIC Report (Sokoto State) – The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has issued a health advisory warning residents of Sokoto, Kebbi and some Northern states about the heightened risk of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), as dry season conditions and heat worsen across parts of the country.

Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) is a serious infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria, affecting the brain and spinal cord, and is spread through respiratory droplets, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated areas. Symptoms include sudden high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea or vomiting, and sensitivity to light.

The states at high risk include Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, Kano, Borno, Jigawa, Adamawa, katsina, Gombe, Yobe and Zamfara.

This is even as the agency urged residents in the central parts of the country to remain alert and report on Symptoms early, while plateau, Oyo, Cross, Edo, Ekiti, and Enugu are categorised as low-vigilance areas.

It also identified children and young adults, people living in overcrowded and, individuals exposed to dry and dusty conditions, and those with weakened immune systems among the most vulnerable groups.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent Meningitis, people are to practice good hygiene, washing hands regularly and avoid sharing personal items like cups or utensils. They should ensure good ventilation in homes, schools and public places, and seek early medical care.
