Benue State Intensifies Efforts to End Malaria

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, civil society organizations, and the National Malaria Elimination Programme, has reaffirmed its commitment to combating malaria through increased awareness and coordinated action across the state.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche, disclosed this on Monday 27th April ,2026 during a press briefing held at the conference Hall of Benue State ministry of Health and Human services State Secretariat in Makurdi.

Dr. Ogwuche emphasized the importance of sustained investment and strong political commitment in the fight against malaria. He noted that the Benue State Government, under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia, with support from development partners and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has implemented several interventions to curb the disease.

Among these efforts is the distribution of over 3.5 million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to residents in 2023, aimed at reducing malaria transmission across communities.

He further revealed that the state government, in partnership with relevant organizations, is providing free testing and treatment for confirmed malaria cases in 433 healthcare facilities statewide—ensuring at least one functional facility per ward. In addition, the state has expanded integrated community case management (iCCM) services to reach children in hard-to-access areas.

Speaking on immunization, the Commissioner highlighted that African Vaccination Week 2026, scheduled from April 27 to May 1, will be observed across all 23 local government areas. The initiative aims to promote equitable access to life-saving vaccines and ensure that even the most remote and underserved populations benefit from immunization services.

Dr. Ogwuche commended stakeholders and partners for their continued support in the malaria elimination campaign and urged residents to take preventive measures, including the consistent use of insecticide-treated nets and prompt medical consultation when symptoms arise.

Also speaking at the event, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Joshua Agbadu, called on media practitioners and stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns on malaria prevention and the importance of vaccination. He expressed appreciation to partners for their unwavering commitment to improving public health outcomes in the state.

The press briefing featured interactive sessions, allowing participants to engage with officials and seek clarification on key health issues. Activities also included a roadshow and the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets to members of the public as part of the sensitization campaign.
