FIC Report (Lagos State) – In a major move to speed up the construction of the massive Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, the Lagos State Government has officially approved several dedicated mining sites for Hitech Construction Company, the firm handling the mega project. The announcement was made by the state’s Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, during a recent ministerial briefing in Alausa, Ikeja. By giving the engineering company direct access to these sites, the government aims to eliminate supply delays and ensure the project moves forward at full speed.
Under this new arrangement, Hitech has been granted exclusive access to dig up and collect essential raw materials, such as sand and gravel, which are absolutely critical for laying the foundation of the multi-trillion naira highway. These newly approved mining sites are located in the strategic Lagos communities of Ilamija, Kajola/Orimedu, and Akodo. To ensure everything runs smoothly, the government is also actively monitoring 20 other mineral sites scattered across areas like Ikorodu, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Ajah, and Badagry to keep a close eye on the state’s natural resources.
The decision to hand over these sites comes at a crucial time, as building a 700-kilometer highway that stretches from Lagos all the way to Calabar requires an unprecedented amount of construction materials. Providing Hitech with its own local supply chain prevents the project from stalling due to material shortages, keeping workers on site and heavy machinery moving. Ultimately, this strategic support is designed to fast-track the timeline so motorists and businesses can start benefiting from the completed sections of the coastal road as soon as possible.
However, digging up and transporting millions of tons of earth comes with environmental challenges, which is why the Lagos State Government has already put a strict management plan into action. A team of 141 approved revenue and compliance consultants has been deployed to monitor the mining zones and ensure the company follows safety and environmental laws. Furthermore, the government is partnering with the Lagos Waste Management Authority to deploy special corridor sweepers, known as “Highway Doctors,” who will instantly clean up any sand, mud, or debris spilled by construction trucks along the busy Ajah, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe routes.
