NAWOJ’s Hands-On Approach to Supporting Girls’ Health: Distributing Pads and Providing Hygiene Education in Edo

FIC Report (Edo State) – The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State Chapter, has embarked on a proactive campaign to support girls’ health and self-esteem. The initiative, marked in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, conducted an outreach program aimed at reinforcing its commitment to the welfare and empowerment of the girl child by distributing free Sanitary Pads and providing Menstrual hygiene education to Students of Benin Technical College.

Led by Chairperson Comrade Habiba Sam, NAWOJ executives visited the School to engage directly with the Students in an interactive session. The event was designed not only to distribute menstrual hygiene products but also to dispel myths, boost confidence, and equip the girls with the knowledge necessary for managing their periods with dignity and health consciousness.

In her address, Comrade Sam emphasized the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation and equipping young girls with knowledge about proper menstrual health management and personal hygiene.

Addressing the Students, she highlighted that menstruation is a natural biological process that should not be a source of shame, embarrassment, or discrimination. She urged the Students to embrace it as a normal part of their growth and development.

Comrade Sam reassured the Students that menstruation should not hinder their education or self-esteem. She urged them to prioritize their health and well-being, stressing that access to accurate information and menstrual hygiene products plays a critical role in helping girls remain confident and productive both in school and in their communities.

“Menstruation is a normal and healthy part of life. No girl should feel inferior or ashamed because she is menstruating. With proper hygiene practices and the right support, girls can continue their education and daily activities confidently, without any limitations,” she said.

The NAWOJ chairperson further noted that the initiative aligns with the Association’s broader mission of advocating for the rights and welfare of women and girls, while supporting vulnerable groups within society through education and empowerment programs.

The Students expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely and impactful. Speaking on behalf of her peers, Miss Favor Oghara thanked NAWOJ for the donation of sanitary pads and the educational session, noting that the program helped dispel misconceptions about menstruation and reinforced the importance of hygiene and confidence during menstruation.

This initiative underscores NAWOJ’s unwavering commitment to supporting the girl child, amplifying women’s voices, and safeguarding vulnerable groups within society. Through this targeted intervention, the Association seeks to foster confidence, health, and dignity among adolescent girls as they navigate a critical stage of their development.

As Nigeria continues to work toward gender equality and improved health standards, initiatives like this play a crucial role in fostering an environment where Girls can thrive academically and socially, free from the barriers of stigma and misinformation.
