FIC Report (Abia State) – The Abia State House of Assembly has expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity and rising cases of kidnapping in some parts of the state. The concern followed the reported abduction of Mr. Denis and Mrs. Onyinyechi Ekechukwu in Umuawa Alaocha community, an incident that has generated fear among residents and renewed calls for stronger security measures at the grassroots level.
The issue was extensively discussed during the House plenary held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Lawmakers described the increasing security challenges as a serious threat to the safety of citizens and the socio-economic development of the state.
Speaking during the plenary, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, described security as a continuous and collective responsibility that requires constant attention from both government and citizens. He noted that although the State Government has been making efforts to improve security across Abia State, there is still a need for additional security apparatus and stronger collaboration among stakeholders.
According to the Speaker, the government remains committed to protecting lives and property, and he assured members that the concerns raised by the House would be communicated to the appropriate authorities for urgent action. He emphasized the need for proactive measures to prevent criminal activities rather than waiting to respond after incidents have occurred.
The Deputy Speaker, who brought the matter before the House, informed members that the victims were allegedly kidnapped in Umuawa Alaocha but were later rescued through the courageous efforts of local youths in the community. He commended the youths for their bravery and vigilance, describing their actions as a clear demonstration of the importance of community participation in maintaining security.
He further stressed that while security remains the primary responsibility of government, community members also have important roles to play in supporting security agencies through intelligence gathering and timely reporting of suspicious activities. He noted that criminals often operate within communities unnoticed and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
The Deputy Speaker also called on the Mayors of the seventeen Local Government Areas of the state to reactivate and strengthen their Community Development Committees and other grassroots security structures. According to him, these committees were established to promote community engagement, information sharing, and collaboration between local authorities and security agencies.
He urged the mayors to take a more active role in coordinating security activities within their respective local government areas. He maintained that regular meetings with community leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and security operatives would help identify potential threats early and improve response mechanisms.
In addition, the Deputy Speaker appealed to traditional rulers, village heads, presidents-general, and town union leaders to work closely with local government authorities and security agencies in promoting peace and security within their communities. He emphasized that community leaders occupy strategic positions and are often the first to notice unusual movements or activities within their domains.
Contributing to the debate, the member representing Ohafia North State Constituency advised the State Government to provide additional support to vigilante groups operating across the state. He specifically recommended that the Ministry of Public Utilities and relevant government agencies procure and distribute essential equipment to vigilante personnel to enhance their effectiveness in crime prevention and surveillance.
According to him, vigilante groups serve as important partners in community policing and often provide valuable support to conventional security agencies, especially in rural areas where security presence may be limited.
The Law maker later adjourned their sitting to reconvene on Tuesday 23rd June, 2026
