Benue Police Begin Crackdown On Unregistered, Obscured Number Plates

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State Police Command has announced the commencement of a statewide enforcement exercise against vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, unauthorised number plates, as well as unregistered vehicles, in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

According to the Command PPRO Dsp Edet Udeme said the exercise which takes effect from Thursday, June 18, 2026, is aimed at strengthening security and enhancing crime prevention across the state.

The Police said the initiative is designed to address security concerns arising from the use of such vehicles by criminal elements to evade identification and perpetrate unlawful activities.

Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiogbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure strict, coordinated and professional enforcement of the directive throughout the state.

The Command noted that vehicles operating without proper registration or with altered number plates undermine policing efforts, hinder crime detection and investigation, and pose a significant threat to public safety.

Residents have therefore been advised to ensure their vehicles are duly registered and fitted with valid, clearly visible registration number plates at all times. Vehicle owners are also urged to keep their vehicle documents up to date and readily available for inspection.

While assuring law-abiding citizens that the exercise is not intended to cause inconvenience, the Police described the operation as a proactive measure to enhance security and support effective law enforcement.

CP Nwadiogbu also warned officers participating in the exercise against extortion, harassment or any form of misconduct, stressing that offenders would face disciplinary action.

The Command further called on residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by reporting suspicious persons, vehicles and activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines, emphasizing that security remains a collective responsibility
