FIC Report (Edo State) – Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has issued a stern warning to the management of Rongtai Building Materials Nigeria Ltd. to enhance safety and security protocols at its Utesi facility in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, following a series of devastating incidents that led to worker fatalities and facility destruction.
The directive was issued during a visit on August 19, 2026, aimed at assessing the circumstances surrounding the incidents that led to the loss of lives and subsequent property destruction.
Governor Okpebholo expressed deep concern over the tragic deaths of five workers last month, which were reportedly caused by electrocution and a fall from a crane. He condemned the violent protests that ensued, during which over 20 Vehicles, Motorcycles, and parts of the company’s infrastructure were vandalized by angry workers, community members, and local youths. The governor described the events as deeply unfortunate and called for a peaceful resolution.
He emphasized the importance of prioritizing Workers Safety and Welfare, urging the company to upgrade its security and emergency response facilities. “An establishment of this nature should not be attacked like this,” he stated. He also highlighted the need for the company to establish a dedicated medical clinic, procure an ambulance, and hire medical personnel—measures he deemed vital given the company’s sizable workforce.
Furthermore, Okpebholo encouraged Rongtai to expand its corporate social responsibility activities and improve infrastructure within the facility, including the construction of proper access roads. He noted that better roads would facilitate smoother operations, benefit the community, and enhance security around the premises.
The Governor revealed that discussions with the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, had led to plans for establishing a Police post at the site, with accommodations for Officers, to provide round-the-clock security and safeguard the large workforce of over 8,000 employees.
Representing Rongtai, Huang Shibin appreciated the Governor’s visit and acknowledged the Company’s efforts to fulfill its corporate social responsibilities. However, he raised concerns about Community Elders allegedly receiving substantial sums from the company without ensuring that the benefits reached the broader community, calling for improved security and a more conducive operational environment.
The Governor was accompanied by Senior Government Officials, including the Commissioners for Public Safety and Security, Festus Ebea, and for Labour and Productivity, Godwin Eshieshi, as well as the Deputy Chairman of the Edo State APC, Sylvester Aigboboh.
