FIC Report (Edo State) – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has appealed to the Edo State Government to introduce a dedicated Weigh-in Allowance for media workers within the State Public Service. This request aims to recognize the unique and demanding nature of Journalism and Media Practice, which often entails working beyond regular hours and responding swiftly to unfolding events.

The appeal was articulated in a Communiqué issued at the conclusion of the Union’s Congress held on August 20, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre in Benin City. The Communiqué was signed by NUJ Edo State Chairman, Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Andy Egbon. The drafting Committee included Aliu Ozioruva (Chairman), Famous Iguisi (Secretary), and Joe Erhahuyi (Member).

Addressing the challenges faced by Media Personnel, the Union emphasized that their work schedule often extends into weekends, Public holidays, and irregular hours, which distinguishes their working conditions from those of other public servants. The proposed Weigh-in Allowance is envisioned as a means to motivate Media Workers, boost their morale, and enhance their commitment and productivity in serving the Public interest.

“The nature of media work requires Journalists and Media Personnel to be on standby round the clock, ready to respond to emergencies and breaking news at short notice,” the Communiqué stated. The Union urged the Edo State Government to consider this request as part of broader efforts to improve the welfare and working conditions of media practitioners in the state.

In Addition to the Welfare plea, the NUJ commended the Government for its punctuality in Salary payments, timely release of promotions, and other entitlements. The union called on the government to sustain these efforts, emphasizing that regular and prompt remunerations are vital for motivating Public Servants.

During the Congress, discussions also covered infrastructural and developmental issues affecting Edo State. The Union called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts toward rehabilitating the deteriorating federal roads in the state, while urging the State Government to accelerate the repair of internal roads within Benin City. The Congress praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for ongoing Infrastructure projects, including the construction of flyovers at Ramat Park and along Sapele Road near Adesuwa Road Junction.

On the Power Supply front, the Union expressed concern over the inconsistent electricity supply and billing issues with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC). It appealed for improved service delivery and accurate billing that reflects actual consumption.

The Congress also addressed environmental concerns, condemning the poor sanitary conditions around King’s Square and other parts of Benin City. The Union urged Authorities to enforce sanitation laws more rigorously to promote cleaner and healthier urban spaces.

Agricultural Initiatives by the State Government received commendation, especially the procurement of farming equipment. However, the Union called for greater transparency and fairness in the distribution of resources, as well as enhanced support for Farmers through training, access to financing, and extension Services.

On Security, the Union acknowledged recent improvements, particularly the decline in kidnapping incidents, and urged Security Agencies and Government to sustain these efforts to ensure the safety of residents, businesses, and visitors.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Elections, the NUJ urged Political parties, aspirants, and supporters to conduct peaceful, responsible, and issue-based campaigns. The Union emphasized the importance of avoiding violence, hate speech, intimidation, and character assassination during the electoral process.

The Congress reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to advocating for the welfare of Journalists and the overall development of Edo State, calling for collaborative efforts among Stakeholders to foster sustainable growth and social harmony.
