The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has raised the bar on engineering regulation with the approval of stronger compliance and enforcement measures, alongside initiatives to promote professional, technical skills and public safety.
These decisions were reached at its 190th Ordinary Council Meeting held on 9th July, 2026 at the COREN Headquarters in Abuja, where Council considered reports and memoranda on registration and licensing of engineering practitioners and firms, renewable energy certification, regulation and enforcement, skills development, engineering education, digital compliance and public awareness.
As part of efforts to deepen regulation and improve service delivery, Council approved the registration of 2001 engineering practitioners, comprising, 1410 Engineers, 227 Engineering Technologists, 15 Engineering Technicians, 334 Engineering Craftsmen and 15 Expatriate Practitioners. It also approved the registration of 33 engineering firms, across various areas of engineering practice.
Under the Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) Certification Scheme being implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), Council approved full accreditation for Sato Engineering Services Limited, Ibadan; EtinPower Limited, Benin; and CeeSolar Energy Limited, Abuja.
Council also considered certification examination results from seven training centres involving 478 candidates, of whom 177 passed, and directed the adoption of the COREN/NESP-approved Solar Photovoltaic Installation Training Curriculum at Enerplaz Paygo Solutions, Port Harcourt.
In response to recurring engineering failures and building collapses, council approved strategies to strengthen COREN’s regulatory intervention and enforcement activities. It also approved a structured competency development programme for Engineering Regulation Inspection Officers.
A comprehensive regulatory strategy was further approved, covering a nationwide public awareness campaign, an integrated digital compliance and verification platform, mandatory COREN compliance for engineering procurement and approvals, stronger Engineering Compliance Inspectorate Units, enhanced collaboration with relevant agencies, stricter enforcement of annual practising licence requirements and the establishment of National Engineering Practice Database.
Council also approved a nationwide compliance audit of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to assess implementation of the approved enhanced entry point policy foe engineers in the Public Service, alongside renewed engagement with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
Regarding skills advancement and engineering standards, council approved the automation of registration processes for engineering artisans and Skills Training Centres on the COREN Portal, as well as measures to strengthen the recognition and regulation of engineering craftsmen.
It also directed collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) towards developing National Occupational Standards for several technical occupations, including bicycle mechanics, GSM phone repairs, satellite installation, tractor operation and maintenance, motor body building and transmission repairs.
For engineering education, Council approved implementation of the National Engineering Admission Quota and Carrying Capacity Enforcement Framework to promote quality assurance in engineering programmes in Nigerian Universities.
Council approved revised Terms of Reference for the Codes and Standards Committee to strengthen the development, review, promotion and monitoring of engineering codes and standards.
In another significant decision, council approved the adoption of the Engineering Sliding Scale of Fees in Nigeria (ESSOFIN) as well as the organisation of regional stakeholders’ engagement workshops before the end of 2026. The workshops are intended to promote broad-based consultation, facilitate consensus-building and foster nationwide ownership of the initiative.
The Registrar assured practitioners, government institutions, industry stakeholders and the public of COREN’s commitment to implementing these resolutions in line with its statutory mandate.
