FIC REPORT (BENUE STATE) – A former Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, Prof. Daniel Bo, has charged journalists to remain fearless, patriotic and passionate in the discharge of their professional responsibilities.
Prof. Bo, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), gave the charge on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while presenting a paper titled “Know Who You Are” at the NUJ Benue State Council Congress held at the union’s secretariat in Makurdi.
He described journalists as nationalists, patriots and the conscience of the nation, stressing that they have a responsibility to uphold truth, promote the public interest and remain committed to professional ethics, even in the face of threats and intimidation.
According to him, journalism requires courage and resilience, urging practitioners who are unwilling to confront the challenges associated with the profession to consider other vocations.
“Go and be a farmer if you are scared of threats,” he said, emphasising that journalists must be courageous and resolute in carrying out their duties.
Prof. Bo recalled the historic role of journalism in Nigeria’s struggle for independence, citing nationalist journalists, including the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, who used the profession as a platform to advance the cause of national liberation.
He noted that the responsibility of journalists goes beyond reporting events, as the quality of stories published can shape public perception, influence opinions and ultimately affect the direction of society.
The university don expressed concern over the growing confusion in society, attributing part of it to the nature and quality of information being circulated. He therefore urged journalists to continuously demonstrate the relevance of professional journalism through credible, balanced and responsible reporting.
Prof. Bo explained that the theme “Know Who You Are” was designed to encourage journalists to reflect on their professional identity and ensure that their practice remains consistent with the values, ethics and responsibilities of journalism.
He maintained that journalists who understand their professional identity would naturally demonstrate nationalism, patriotism, passion and commitment to the profession.
The lecturer also called for greater unity among journalists, urging members of the union to resolve their differences amicably rather than allowing internal disagreements to undermine the strength and credibility of the profession.
He stressed that solidarity among practitioners was essential to confronting the challenges facing journalism and safeguarding the integrity, credibility and future of the profession.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the NUJ, Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, appreciated Prof. Bo for sharing his knowledge and experience with journalists.
Ugber described the presentation as a valuable contribution towards strengthening professional journalism and enhancing the capacity of journalists to effectively serve society.
