Senate Resumes Plenary, President Akpabio Lists Insecurity, Flooding, High Cost of Living as Pressing Concerns

The Senate has resumed plenary after its annual recess, with the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, identifying insecurity, flooding and the high cost of living as some of the pressing challenges confronting the nation.

Speaking at the resumption of plenary, Dr. Akpabio expressed concern over the security situation in parts of the country, particularly the reported abduction of Nigerians in Marisa and at Dekera Mosque.

The Senate President said sympathy alone was not enough in the face of the security challenges, calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue those in captivity and protect vulnerable communities across the country.

He urged the nation’s security agencies to approach the situation with renewed vigour and ensure that citizens are adequately protected from acts of terrorism, banditry and other forms of insecurity.

Akpabio also called on leaders at all levels to ensure that ongoing economic reforms translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

He stressed the need for government policies and reforms to deliver meaningful relief to citizens, particularly in the face of the prevailing high cost of living.

The Senate President further called for peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging politicians and their supporters to place the interest and safety of Nigerians above political ambitions.

He emphasized that political contests should not become a source of violence, division or loss of lives, stressing that no electoral victory was worth the life of any Nigerian.

During the sitting, the Senate considered six communications from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking confirmation of appointments, approval of the 2026 budget of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and consideration of establishment bills.

Among the bills is the proposed legislation seeking to establish the National Research and Development Fund aimed at strengthening research, innovation and development in the country.

The communications and proposals were referred to the relevant Senate committees for further legislative consideration and necessary action.

The Senate also paid tribute to the late former Governor of Kogi State, Ibrahim Idris and the late Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani whose deaths were mourned by the lawmakers.

The resumption of plenary marks the commencement of another legislative session in which the Senate is expected to continue consideration of matters of national importance, with particular attention to security, economic development, infrastructure and the welfare of Nigerians.
