FIC REPORT (EDO STATE) – The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday commissioned 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses procured by the Edo State Government and launched a N1 billion economic empowerment programme for 5,000 beneficiaries in the state.

The initiatives, unveiled in Benin City, are aimed at improving public transportation, supporting small businesses and expanding economic opportunities for women, youths and other vulnerable groups.

Under the empowerment programme, each of the 5,000 beneficiaries will receive N200,000 to strengthen their businesses, improve their livelihoods and promote financial independence.

Senator Tinubu described the initiatives of Governor Monday Okpebholo as significant steps towards improving the welfare of Edo residents and stimulating economic growth across the state.

Expressing delight at her visit to Edo, the First Lady said the commissioning of the CNG buses would benefit the people by improving access to public transportation.

She also encouraged the empowerment beneficiaries to utilise the funds effectively to grow their businesses and improve their economic circumstances.

“I pray that the monies received will prosper in your hands and grow your businesses,” she said.

Earlier, Governor Okpebholo welcomed the First Lady, describing her visit as a demonstration of care, compassion and commitment to the welfare and development of the people.

According to the governor, the initiatives address two major needs of Edo residents: access to affordable public transportation and economic empowerment, particularly for women and small-business operators.

He explained that the CNG buses would make transportation more accessible, affordable and efficient, while offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

Okpebholo further stressed the importance of empowering women, noting that financial support for women-owned businesses could strengthen families, improve communities and contribute to the state’s economic development.

“When you empower a woman, you strengthen a family, uplift a community and contribute to the prosperity of society,” he said.

The governor expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and support, reaffirming his loyalty to the President and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He assured residents that his administration would continue to pursue policies and programmes designed to improve living standards, expand economic opportunities and promote inclusive development across Edo State.

“Our commitment is to build an Edo State where good governance is felt in every home, opportunities are within the reach of every citizen, and no community is left behind,” he added.
