The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s education reforms are expanding access to tertiary education, promoting vocational skills and strengthening the foundation for teacher training in Nigeria,

Idris stated this in Abuja on Thursday, October 29, 2026, in a keynote address delivered on his behalf by the Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos, at the meeting of the Committee of Governing Councils of Federal Colleges of Education.

“Education occupies a central place in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda because the administration recognises that Nigeria’s greatest resource is its people. Our ambition to build a prosperous and inclusive economy can only be achieved through sustained investment in human capital, particularly the education and development of our young people,” the Minister said.

Idris highlighted the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a major intervention helping eligible students overcome financial barriers to tertiary education. He also cited the Federal Government’s renewed focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which aims to equip young Nigerians with practical skills for employment, entrepreneurship and emerging opportunities in the labour market.

The Minister also said the success of education reforms depended on well-trained teachers and effective leadership in educational institutions. He urged governing councils to promote transparency, accountability, prudent resource management, and clear working relationships with institutional management.

“Every investment we make in the training of a teacher is an investment in the future of countless Nigerian children. The quality of our teachers will shape learning outcomes, national development and the opportunities available to future generations,” Idris said.

The Minister further urged the governing councils to strengthen the teaching of national values, civic responsibility and critical thinking. He said teachers play an important role in helping young Nigerians distinguish facts from falsehoods, respect diversity, and contribute to a peaceful, united country.

“Success must be reflected in improved academic standards, stronger institutional governance, better-equipped teachers and, ultimately, improved learning outcomes for Nigerian children”, the Minister stated.

He challenged participants to make practical recommendations to improve governance and academic standards across Federal Colleges of Education, stressing that better-trained teachers and improved learning outcomes should measure performance.

Idris congratulated the Committee on its commitment to teacher education and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s recognition of its role in national development.
