FIC Report (Abia State) – The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting arts, culture, and the creative economy as key drivers of social and economic development during the opening of the “Defining Us” Art and Cultural Festival held in commemoration of World Art Day.

Declaring the festival open on behalf of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, the Deputy Governor, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu, emphasized the importance of art as a powerful tool for preserving heritage, inspiring innovation, fostering unity, and telling the stories of communities.

The Deputy commended the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Matthew C. Ekwuribe, and House of Crystal Empire for their collaboration in organizing the festival, describing the initiative as a valuable platform for artists, students, cultural enthusiasts, and creative professionals to showcase their talents and strengthen the state’s cultural ecosystem.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Arts and Culture,Mr Matthew C. Ekwuribe, highlighted the transformation taking place across Abia State under the leadership of Governor Otti, noting that the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy has recorded significant progress since 2023.
According to him, the ministry is actively partnering with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments to upgrade the National War Museum and is also working on the development of key tourist attractions, including the Ojukwu Bunker, Azumini Blue River, and Iwollo Waterfall.
He revealed that the state has identified over 55 viable cultural and tourism sites for development.

The Commissioner stressed that the theme of the festival, “Defining Us,” reflects the importance of preserving cultural identity and promoting indigenous values. He encouraged residents, particularly young people, to embrace their heritage and take pride in their language and traditions.

He further noted that the creative economy has become a major contributor to economic growth, tourism, innovation, and cultural diplomacy globally, adding that the Abia State Government remains committed to creating opportunities for artists and creative entrepreneurs.

A major highlight of the festival was the art competition involving secondary school students, including the innovative “Waste to Art” category. Ekwuribe described the initiative as an investment in the future, encouraging young artists to use creativity to transform challenges into opportunities and contribute to the story of a new Abia.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of House of Crystal Empire ,Mr Chimdindu Onyekwelu,encouraged participants, especially students, to remain committed to their dreams and creative pursuits.

“Your dreams are valid. You are enough. Keep putting in the work, and at the right time, the results will come,” he said, noting that the festival was conceived over a year ago and has now become a reality through dedication and perseverance.

The festival brought together artists, educators, students, cultural advocates, and stakeholders from across the state in a celebration of creativity, culture, and identity. Participants were encouraged to take advantage of exhibitions, cultural displays, networking opportunities, and creative engagements designed to promote artistic excellence and cultural preservation.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment by the Abia State Government and its partners to position Abia as a leading destination for arts, culture, tourism, and creative innovation in Nigeria.
