FIC Report (Bayelsa State) – The Bayelsa State Government has presented two coaster buses to the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), fulfilling its commitment to improving transportation, logistics and the welfare of staff and students of the specialised tertiary institution.
The vehicles were formally presented to the university management at Government House, Yenagoa, on Tuesday, with the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, handing over the vehicle documents to the Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Prof. Dimie Ogoina.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Douye Diri, Prof. Ayawei said the procurement of the buses was in response to the pressing transportation needs of the university, particularly given its operation across two campuses.
He said the buses would facilitate the movement of staff and students between the university’s main campus in Yenagoa and its satellite campus in Sampou, thereby supporting academic and administrative activities.
“We congratulate you on behalf of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri. These buses are meant to improve logistics and support academic activities,” Ayawei said.
The gesture, according to the state government, underscores the Diri administration’s continued investment in education as a critical driver of human capital development and the state’s socio-economic growth.
At the national level, the development also aligns with the broader emphasis of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration on strengthening education, developing human capital and improving the learning environment as part of its Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Federal Government has continued to place education and skills development among key components of its human capital development strategy, recognising that improved infrastructure, access and institutional capacity are essential to producing a skilled workforce capable of driving national development.
Receiving the documents on behalf of the Governing Council, management, staff and students of BMU, Prof. Ogoina expressed appreciation to Governor Diri and the state government for fulfilling its promise to the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor recalled the governor’s earlier pledge to continue supporting BMU, describing the university as an important institution for producing medical professionals, including surgeons, to serve hospitals in Bayelsa and beyond.
Ogoina assured the state government that the buses would be put to optimal use and properly maintained to ensure their durability and continued service to the university community.
“As an institution with two campuses, these vehicles will significantly enhance movement, improve staff and student welfare, and promote academic activities at BMU,” he said.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, congratulated BMU on the procurement and allocation of the two coaster buses, describing the gesture as a significant boost to transportation and the overall welfare of staff and students.
Emelah commended Governor Diri for keeping his commitment to the university community, noting that the fulfilment of the promise demonstrated the administration’s sustained dedication to creating a conducive academic environment.
He said investments of this nature were essential to strengthening educational institutions and ensuring that students and academic staff had the necessary support to pursue teaching, learning, research and professional development effectively.
The Bayelsa Medical University, as a specialised institution focused on medical education and training, plays a strategic role in developing the health workforce needed to meet the state’s medical manpower requirements.
The presentation was witnessed by the Acting Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, and members of the BMU management team.
