FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, has commenced its Second International Health Investment Summit and Scientific Exhibition, aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and attracting medical investments to improve clinical services in Benue State.

Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the event on Thursday, 16th October, 2025, at the Cafeteria Hall, Makurdi, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of BSUTH, Dr. Stephen Hwande, stated that the second edition of the summit was convened to review the outcomes of the maiden edition and address identified gaps in medical practice, research, and infrastructure.

Dr. Hwande emphasized that the medical profession is evolving globally, and Nigeria must align with international standards in healthcare delivery. He noted that BSUTH has upgraded several diagnostic and therapeutic facilities to enhance patient care and overall service quality.

According to him, the summit provides a platform for medical experts, researchers, and investors to exchange ideas on innovative healthcare solutions, biomedical technology, and specialized treatment options.

Leading one of the technical sessions, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, Professor Simon Ubwa, commended BSUTH for its remarkable progress. Similarly, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Professor Edwin Ogwuche, lauded Dr. Hwande for transforming the Benue Valley into a potential hub for medical tourism.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Professor Michael Agbir, explained that the summit also aims to launch a ₦2 billion appeal fund for the procurement of advanced medical equipment and the expansion of the hospital’s therapeutic centre for autism and children with special needs.

Professor Agbir, who also serves as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of BSUTH, highlighted the achievements of the Governor Hyacinth Alia-led administration through Dr. Hwande’s leadership, particularly in upgrading medical facilities and recruiting more healthcare professionals.

Other speakers, including the former Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Joseph Ngbea, presented papers underscoring BSUTH’s potential to emerge as a major destination for medical tourism in Nigeria.
