A 15-member inspection delegation of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), led by Dr. Christian Emeruwa, Head of Safety and Security, CAF, is in Nigeria for a final assessment of facilities and logistics ahead of the country’s hosting of the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly scheduled for November 21, 2026 in Abuja, and the CAF Awards slated for December 7, 2026 in Lagos.
The inspection exercise is aimed at evaluating Nigeria’s level of preparedness and ensuring that all requirements for the successful hosting of the two high-profile continental events are met.
The delegation, accompanied by a six-member Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) team led by Dr. Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications, has inspected critical facilities in Abuja, including the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Transcorp Hilton Hotel and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
During a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, the CAF team discussed key operational areas including accommodation, transportation, immigration procedures, hospitality and general logistics.
Mallam Dikko reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to providing full support to ensure seamless coordination and successful hosting. He noted that Nigeria is determined to leverage the events to showcase its organisational capacity, hospitality and readiness to host major international sporting gatherings.
The inspection marks the delegation’s second and final assessment in Nigeria, following an earlier visit to Lagos. The exercise is expected to provide CAF with a comprehensive overview of Nigeria’s preparedness before the team submits its report to CAF management.
Key areas of engagement include streamlining visa and entry procedures for delegates, securing landing permits and other relevant documentation, and ensuring effective collaboration among government agencies and event organisers.
The Commission disclosed that accommodation and transportation arrangements in Abuja have been addressed following interventions by relevant authorities, while plans for a welcome dinner and other hospitality activities are being coordinated with event partners and government hosts.
Preparations also include the constitution of a Local Organising Committee (LOC), whose composition will be communicated to CAF to facilitate counterpart engagement and strengthen coordination.
The first preparatory delegation is expected to arrive in Nigeria on November 8, 2026 ahead of the General Assembly, while the current inspection team is expected to conclude its assignment and depart Nigeria on November 23, 2026.
The 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly will hold on November 21, 2026 at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, while the CAF Awards will take place in Lagos on December 7, 2026.
Nigeria’s hosting of the General Assembly represents a significant opportunity to strengthen its standing within African football administration and demonstrate its capacity to deliver major continental events. The Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission, in collaboration with the NFF and other stakeholders, remains committed to ensuring that both events meet the highest organisational standards.
The successful hosting of both events is expected to enhance Nigeria’s visibility across the continent, deepen engagement with African football stakeholders and further project the country’s potential as a destination for major international sporting events.
