David Umahi Holds 4th Matric, Expels, Suspends Students Over Misconduct

FIC Report (Ebonyi State) – The David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, DUFUHS, Uburu in Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State, has expelled and suspended not less than 11 students of the institution over examination misconduct and other unruly behaviours.

The University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Jesse Uneke, disclosed this on Saturday during the institution’s 4th matriculation ceremony of 990 new students comprised of 346 males and 644 females for the 2024/2025 academic session at the school premises.

Uneke said, “Between the last matriculation and the present, the Senate of the university approved disciplinary actions on a total of 14 students depending on the magnitude of their offences, of these, 2 students were expelled due to examination misconduct, 8 students received one-year suspension for stealing, and 3 students were withdrawn as a result of poor academic performance.

Uneke advised the new students of the university to be strictly disciplined in their academic pursuits as he urged their parents and guardians to be active players in grooming them to complete their studies excellently in the school.

He recalled that the National Universities Commission, NUC issued a Certificate of recognition to the university on 7th July 2021, and on the 21st October 2021, it approved a total of six faculties with 19 departments including Medicine & Surgery, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Engineering, Radiography & Radiation Science, Optometry, Microbiology/Parasitology, Public Health, Human Nutrition & Dietetics Computer Science, Industrial Physics, Industrial Chemistry, Industrial Mathematics and Biology/Biotechnology for operation.

He further stated that on the 18th of December 2021, the university was enlisted in the JAMB admission portal and by the 24th of January 2022, the institution commenced full academic activities with a total of 26 students.

He noted that the university had experienced an unprecedented increase in students’ admission in the second year as the students’ population became 701 by January 2023, and today, they increased to 2,496 in number.

The Vice-Chancellor said the university had made some significant achievements including 90 per cent completion of a 1,799 seater Ultra-modern multipurpose auditorium project from the TETFUND, completion of 20 rooms, two floors of professorial Guest House from TETFUND, completion and furnishing of 72 rooms, four floors Ultra-modern female students hostel from TETFUND and 40 rooms two floors Ultra-modern male hostel on the roofing level.

Others includes the completion of three floors of student laboratories and classroom complex, establishment of anatomical/cadaver dissection and museum complex with a capacity of 190 students per time, completion of university incinerator and waste management facility, completion of boys hostels giant external water stanchion and water reticulation system, completion of the Nigeria Communications Commission Ultra-modern ICT Centre fully equipped, among others.

Journalist reports that Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Grace Umezurike who honoured the matriculation ceremony used the opportunity to commission the Science Laboratory Complex for Physics, Chemistry and Biology programmes in the university.
