Digital Privacy Key to Trust in Nigeria’s Digital Economy – Accountability Lab Director

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Country Director of Accountability Lab Nigeria, Mr. Friday Odeh, has emphasized that digital privacy is crucial for protecting individual rights and fostering trust in Nigeria’s digital economy.

Speaking at a One-Day Digital Rights Roundtable organized for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Benue State on Thursday 27th March, 2025. Mr Odeh underscored the need for Nigerians to safeguard their digital information and use the digital space responsibly.

He noted that despite the enactment of the Data Protection Act 2023 and the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation, gaps remain in public awareness and enforcement. Many individuals are unaware of their rights, while data collectors and administrators often fail to uphold their responsibilities in securing sensitive information.

“Personal data breaches frequently go unreported, leaving individuals vulnerable to exploitation. At the grassroots level, data privacy violations are increasing, often occurring without the victims’ knowledge,” Odeh stated.

He explained that the roundtable aimed to equip CSOs in Benue with the knowledge and tools to understand Nigeria’s legal frameworks on data privacy and freedom of expression. Additionally, it sought to strengthen advocacy for stricter data protection policies and enforcement.

“We also want to enhance the reporting of violations on the Ripoti platform and hold key actors accountable for data privacy breaches,” he added.

While acknowledging the Nigeria Data Protection Act as a solid foundation for securing the digital space, Odeh stressed the need for stronger implementation and public awareness to ensure its effectiveness.

The roundtable brought together CSOs, government officials, and media practitioners to foster collaboration in strengthening digital rights and data protection in Nigeria.
