ECOEWRM Holds 2-Day Flood Emergency Workshop in Seven States from August 20

The Economic Community of West African States Early Warning and Response Mechanism in Nigeria (ECOEWRM) will hold a State Planning Workshop for Flood Emergency Response and Management from August 20 – September 14, 2018 in seven states of Nigeria.

A statement released recently in Abuja by ECOEWRM, Nigeria indicates that the workshop with the theme: “Building Flood Resilient Communities” is scheduled to hold in Ikeja, Lagos State – August 20 – 21; Benin, Edo State – August 27 – 28; Port-Harcourt, Rivers State – August 30 – 31. It will also take place in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State from September 3 – 4; Owerri in Imo State from September 6 – 7 and Katsina in Katsina State from the 10th of September to 11th. The final programme has been slated to hold in Awka, Anambra State between September 13 and 14, 2018.

According to the statement the workshop is expected to be declared open by Governors of the States where the workshop will take place. During the workshop State Governments will be required to give an update on the efforts they have made towards mitigating imminent flood incidents in their states. Participants will also review the 2018 seasonal rainfall predictions and the annual flood outlook.

One of the outcomes of the workshop will be the setting up of a Technical Committee on the vulnerability assessment of the states.

The statement further disclosed that participants at the events will comprise State Governors, Ministers of relevant ministries, Federal Legislators ,State Commissioners, The Armed Forces, Police and the paramilitary. Others will include: Developmental Partners, Local Government Chairmen, Civil Society Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations.
