Federal Government Commissions Landmark Power Infrastructure Projects In Lagos, Reinforcing Nigeria’s Transmission Network

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by the Honourable Minister of Power Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe has on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, today, officially commissioned two landmark electricity transmission projects in Lagos State, underscoring its commitment to modernising Nigeria’s power infrastructure and driving economic growth.

Commissioning of 132/33kV GIS Substation in Apapa
The Honourable Minister commissioned the new 2×60MVA, 132/33kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Apapa Road, Lagos. This milestone marks a significant reinforcement of Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure and a strategic investment in one of the nation’s most economically vital corridors.

The Apapa corridor, home to Nigeria’s busiest ports, maritime services, logistics hubs, manufacturing plants, warehouses, and commercial enterprises, is a critical artery of the national economy. The commissioning of this modern GIS facility, which replaces the aging 1985 substation, increases bulk power availability in the axis by approximately 96 megawatts.

Equipped with advanced switchgear, Substation Automation Systems (SAS), SCADA infrastructure, and modern protection and control systems, the facility will ensure reliable electricity supply to industries and communities that drive Nigeria’s economic growth.

This project was delivered through purposeful international cooperation under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme, with execution by Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Takaoka Engineering Company Limited, and supervision by Yachiyo Engineering Company Limited. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided critical support, underscoring Japan’s longstanding role as a valued development partner to Nigeria. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) provided technical leadership, ensuring seamless integration into the national grid.

Further speaking at the commissioning, the Honourable Minister emphasized that electricity is central to President Tinubu’s ambition of transforming Nigeria into a one trillion-dollar economy. He noted that the administration is committed to strengthening substations, reinforcing transmission corridors, removing bottlenecks, and creating the capacity required to deliver available electricity to consumers. He further stressed that this achievement is not the end of a journey but a step towards building an electricity system that serves as a foundation for industrial competitiveness and economic growth.

The Federal Government expressed profound appreciation to the Government and people of Japan, JICA, and all professionals whose expertise and dedication brought the project to completion. Special recognition was given to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu, for his unwavering commitment to development and partnership in creating an enabling environment for transformative investments.

The Honourable Joseph Tegbe concluded by dedicating the project to the people of Lagos, the industries and businesses that power Nigeria’s economy, and all Nigerians whose prosperity remains at the heart of the renewed hope agenda. He reaffirmed the government’s determination to continue reinforcing transmission infrastructure nationwide, addressing bottlenecks, supporting distribution improvements, and mobilizing capital to build an electricity system capable of sustaining Africa’s most populous nation.

Similarly, at Ijora, Lagos, the Honourable Minister Commissioned Two 100MVA Transformers at Ijora Substation
The Honourable Minister also officially commissioned two 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformers at the Ijora Transmission Substation, Lagos. This landmark upgrade increases the substation’s capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA (equivalent to 184MW), delivering an additional 112MW of bulk transmission capacity to support industries, ports, commercial centres, and communities across Lagos.

According to him, the intervention will significantly improve electricity supply to Ijora, Costain, Oyingbo, Customs, and adjoining communities within the Eko Electricity Distribution Company franchise area. It represents a major step in the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda to modernise Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and drive economic growth.

Speaking, the Minister reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bold vision to transform Nigeria into a one trillion-dollar economy, with reliable electricity as a cornerstone. He commended the Lagos State Government, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the World Bank, Shanghai Electric Group, and the dedicated engineers and professionals who made the project possible.

The commissioning underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the national transmission network, eliminating structural constraints, and ensuring electricity reliably reaches homes, businesses, and industries across Nigeria.
These dual achievements — the commissioning of the Apapa GIS Substation and the upgrade of the Ijora Transmission Substation — highlight the Federal Government’s unwavering determination to reinforce Nigeria’s electricity transmission backbone, foster industrial competitiveness, and secure prosperity for all Nigerians under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
