In a landmark move to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and enhance survivor-centered healthcare services across Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF). The signing ceremony, held in Abuja, marks a transformative partnership aimed at scaling up high-quality, compassionate, and accessible care for survivors nationwide.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs expressed optimism and firm resolve, stating, “Today is not merely the signing of an agreement—it is a declaration of hope and a commitment to action. Together with WARIF, we are ensuring that survivors of sexual violence are no longer left to suffer in silence.”
The strategic MoU focuses on four core pillars:
Capacity Building: Enhancing the competencies of healthcare providers and frontline responders.
Policy Reform: Aligning legal and institutional frameworks with global best practices.
Survivor-Centered Service Delivery: Prioritizing the dignity, health, and agency of survivors.
Nationwide Awareness: Advancing public education to eliminate stigma and encourage reporting.
WARIF, under the leadership of Founder and President Dr. Kemi DaSilva-Ibru, brings invaluable expertise through its Health Pillar, notably its pioneering work in establishing Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs). This partnership will enable the expansion and strengthening of these centers nationwide.
“SGBV is a national crisis with far-reaching consequences,” the Minister noted. “Only through unified action and partnerships like this can we bring about the systemic change our country so urgently needs.”
The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of women, children, and vulnerable groups. This collaboration with WARIF signals a bold step forward in building a safer, more inclusive, and more just Nigeria.
