(FIC Report – Enugu State)The Rector of Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy, Enugu, Prof. John Emaimo, has commended the Federal Government for upgrading the college to University of Allied Health Sciences.
Prof. Emaimo gave the commendation on Tuesday in Enugu while briefing newsmen on the development at the institution.
He described the elevation of the college to a university as a worthwhile move toward restructuring the healthcare sector in the country.
The rector also said that the upgrade of the institution had created room for Federal Ministry of Health to introduce some programmes not offered by conventional universities.
“You know very well that the healthcare sector in Nigeria has been thriving.
“But the upgrade of the Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapeutics into a university has created room for FMH to introduce some germane courses that are not taken in conventional universities.
“We have health professionals like medical doctors, nurses, medical laboratory scientists, but we do not have institutions that are training and building capacities in the areas of manpower management, healthcare financing, healthcare policy and healthcare coordination.
“This becomes kind of link where the FMH feels we should have a university to bring in these courses and coordinate the efforts being made to have effective healthcare service delivery,” he said.
