The Federal Government has inaugurated the Steering Committee for the implementation of the Joint Country Action Plan (JCAP) of the Security Governance Initiative (SGI).

While inaugurating the committee, the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. (rtd) Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, who also launched the SGI Joint Country Action Plan, noted that the JCAP, which was adopted and signed in May 2017, outlined the “roadmap for a successful bilateral engagement under the SGI”.

Gen. Dambazau added that the Security Governance Initiative, designed to improve security governance and capacity in some key areas in Nigeria, is a multi-year partnership between Nigeria and the United States based on existing cooperation.

The SGI would also cover specific thematic areas of insurgency in the North-East, as well as militancy in the Niger Delta.

According to the Minister, the Committee is “expected to meet periodically to evaluate the progress of the program, readjust programs and approve revisions to the SGI objectives where necessary”.

The Committee, which would be jointly chaired by Nigeria and the United States, has the Ministers of Interior, Defence, Foreign Affairs and Justice and Attorney General of the Federation and others, representing Nigeria, while the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Head of SGI delegation, USAID Mission Director and others represent the Government of the United States.

Speaking earlier, the United Ambassador to Nigeria, W. Stuart Symington, pledged the collaboration of the US to improve Nigeria’s security sector.
