FIC REPORT (EBONYI STATE) – The Federal Government says it has intensified the construction, rehabilitation and dualisation of major Federal roads in Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi States, with several projects completed or at advanced stages.
The Federal Controller of Works in the three states, disclosed this while responding to Journalist survey on Federal Government’s intervention on federal roads in the South-East geo-political zone on Friday.
According to them, the ongoing interventions has significantly improved road connectivity and reduce travel time for motorists in most of the south-east states.
Meanwhile, Mr Akinyemi Ojo, the state Director, Ebonyi Directorate of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) said it remained committed to maintaining federal roads and ensuring the safety of road users in the state.
Ojo told Journalist that some of the federal roads in Ebonyi, including the Owutu–Amasiri Road, Oso-Eda–Nguzu–Ohafia Road and Afikpo–Unwana Road, were currently receiving maintenance attention.
He said some other major roads currently undergoing rehabilitation and reconstruction include the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Road, Abakaliki–Afikpo–Cross River Road, Amasiri–Okigwe Road, Abakaliki–Enugu Highway.
The director also said the dualisation of Akpoha Bridge and hill-cutting works at Timber Shade, among others were receiving attention.
Recalls that the Federal Ministry of Works has, on several occasions, conducted inspection tours on the Amasiri–Okigwe Road, Abakaliki–Akpoha–Afikpo Road and other ongoing projects in the state.
During one of the inspections recently, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said that the Amasiri–Okigwe Road was being executed by the Federal Government’s tax-credit scheme with Dangote Industries Ltd.
According to him, the project is part of President Bola Tinubu’s legacy projects in the South-East.
The 65-kilometre project will reconnect Ebonyi, Abia and Imo states after years of severe deterioration. Sections of the road had become impassable due to deep erosion and extensive pavement failure before reconstruction commenced,” he said.
On Okigwe-Uturu Road, the minister said that the Federal Government had begun the pulling down of a section of the 60-metre-high mountain on the road to facilitate the construction of a motorable road and improve safety on the highway.
Also speaking on Okigwe-Uturu highway, the Acting Federal Controller of Works in Ebonyi, Mr Maxwell Oko, said the Highway F112 project comprised 9.9 kilometres of dual carriageway and 55.55km of single carriageway.
Oko explained that the road was being delivered under the tax-credit arrangement, with Dangote Industries Ltd. as the sponsoring company and Hi-Tech Construction as the executing contractor.
The highway constitutes a major arterial route linking communities and adjoining federal highways across Ebonyi, Abia and Imo states, There is a need to prioritise the construction of roads linking border communities because such projects would contribute significantly to national development and rural transformation. Increased federal support for rural road infrastructure would improve the living standards of residents and stimulate economic activities across the South-East and neighbouring regions, he said.
