President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, commissioned the Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BARECKS) and the Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant in Kogi State, as the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN, described the landmark projects as a bold demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to innovation, renewable energy and sustainable national development.
While giving his keynote address at the commissioning ceremony, the Minister said the twin projects reaffirm the Federal Government’s resolve under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to build a knowledge-driven economy where Innovation, Science and Technology (STI) serve as catalysts for industrialisation, job creation, economic prosperity and sustainable national development. He noted that the Ministry remains focused on translating research into practical solutions, innovation into commercial opportunities and scientific discoveries into national wealth.
Dr. Udeh explained that the Barefoot Renewable Energy College represents a strategic investment in technical skills development, designed to produce globally competitive solar technicians, mini-grid operators, renewable energy installers, maintenance specialists, energy auditors and clean-energy entrepreneurs. He noted that, as one of the few specialised renewable energy institutions in Africa, the College combines industry-driven, competency-based training with practical experience to prepare a workforce capable of meeting the demands of the emerging green economy.
The Minister further described the Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant as a strategic national asset that places Nigeria at the forefront of emerging clean-energy technologies. According to him, the facility will provide a platform for cutting-edge research, technology demonstration, capacity building and future industrial applications, enabling the country to participate competitively in the global green-energy value chain while advancing its Energy Transition Plan.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s long-term vision, Dr. Udeh said BARECKS is expected to evolve into Nigeria’s premier centre of excellence for renewable energy technical education and a regional hub for Africa. He stressed that the institution will promote youth empowerment, local content development, technology transfer, enterprise creation and innovation, while supporting the country’s drive towards energy security and sustainable economic growth.
The Minister commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to innovation-driven national transformation, while appreciating Vice President Kashim Shettima for representing the President at the commissioning ceremony. He also lauded the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his support and partnership, and congratulated the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, and his team for successfully delivering the landmark projects.
Dr. Udeh urged the pioneer trainees of the College to embrace excellence, innovation, discipline and lifelong learning, describing them as ambassadors of Nigeria’s clean-energy future. He assured stakeholders that the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology would continue to provide the policy support, strategic partnerships and enabling environment required to sustain the institution and strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness in renewable energy technologies.
