FIC Report (Abia State) – Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to overhaul and modernize the State’s transport sector, emphasizing that efficient transportation is critical to driving Nigeria’s economic growth.
Governor Otti made the remarks during a strategic meeting with a delegation from the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), led by its new Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa.
He expressed optimism that the new NRC leadership would accelerate stalled projects, particularly the Umuahia–Enugu railway corridor, initially scheduled for completion early last year.
Otti stressed the importance of completing the Southeast rail projects with speed and quality, adding that transportation development remains a cornerstone of his economic transformation agenda.
“Our administration is committed to replicating transport models seen in top global cities, not just Oshodi, but places like Paddington in the UK where bus terminals, trains, and economic activities converge 24/7. That’s the kind of modern, vibrant transport hub we are building in Umuahia,” Governor Otti declared.
On concerns over the security of NRC assets in Aba, Governor Otti assured of government support, highlighting his administration’s policy of partnering with all stakeholders, irrespective of whether projects are federal or state-led, as long as they promote development.
Earlier, NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa stated that the meeting was aimed at strengthening collaboration and fast-tracking the revival of the Aba–Umuahia rail line. He emphasized that the NRC is working towards connecting all major Southeast cities to the national rail network, with a target to reduce transportation costs, stabilize the economy, and combat inflation.
The meeting also featured a presentation on the ongoing construction of the Umuahia Railway and Bus Terminal, made by the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Mr. Kingsley Agomoh.
Governor Otti’s bold transportation blueprint underscores his broader vision to reposition Abia as an economic powerhouse, with modern infrastructure that drives commerce, innovation, and prosperity.
Top government officials in attendance included the Honorable Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu; Special Adviser on Transport, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe; and the Principal Secretary to the Governor and Chief Strategy Officer, Mr. Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu.
