FIC Report (Abia State) – Abia State government has assured Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) that it would take necessary steps to get federal government respond appropriately to the yearnings of the NLC and Nigerians to see to the end of the ongoing ASUU strike.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu gave the assurance while receiving in audience leadership and Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abia State Council who came on a peaceful protest at Government House, Umuahia.
He said two weeks has already been given by President Muhammadu Buhari to settle the impasse between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Chris Ezem said the peaceful protest by the NLC is apt and important adding that it is a show of love and solidarity to the ASUU.
He said the government identifies with NLC in the peaceful protest as the ASUU strike is affecting everyone.
He stated that the importance of education cannot be over emphasised and stressed the need for all hands to be on deck to ensure peaceful resolution of the impasse and ensure students are back to school.
Governor Ikpeazu commended the Members of NLC for conducting themselves peacefully and expressed confidence that the consistency the University calendar is known for would soon be returned.
Speaking earlier, the Ist Vice Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) , Abia State Council, Comrade Hope Ekwuribe said the NLC Members were on peaceful protest against the continuous action of the federal government on the ongoing strike by the ASUU.
He decried that the federal government has kept quiet over continuous stay at home by Nigeria students and called for an end to the issue.
He said that the Union was no longer comfortable with the situation of things in the education sector and made a case for the Schools to be reopened so that the Students would go back to Schools.
