The Federal Government of Nigeria is pleased to announce Nigeria’s election to the 35-member Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2026–2028 term.
The Federal Government also congratulates Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Florence Ajimobi, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Austria and Nigeria’s Resident Representative to the IAEA, on her appointment as Governor on the Board.
Following the election held on 17 September 2026 during the Seventh Plenary Session of the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria, Nigeria was elected alongside ten other new members of the Board: Angola, Brazil, Greece, Honduras, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Slovakia and Sweden.
Nigeria’s election comes at an important time when nuclear safety, security and safeguards feature prominently in global discussions on the application of nuclear science and technology for peaceful and developmental purposes, particularly in healthcare, energy, agriculture, food security, water-resource management and environmental sustainability.
The Federal Government considers Nigeria’s election both a recognition of its commitment to the IAEA’s “Atoms for Peace and Development” mandate and an opportunity to contribute to strengthening international cooperation and global nuclear governance for the benefit of humanity.
The Federal Government commends Ambassador Ajimobi and the Embassy of Nigeria in Vienna on this milestone and expresses confidence that she will provide effective representation and engage constructively on policy matters that advance the IAEA’s mandate and promote Nigeria’s nuclear priorities and interests within the Agency.
Established on 29 July 1957, the IAEA serves as the world’s central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field. Its Board of Governors and General Conference of Member States serve as its policy-making bodies. Nigeria became a Member State of the IAEA in 1964 and currently cooperates with the Agency under the Country Programme Framework (CPF) for 2024–2029, focusing on nuclear and radiation safety and security; food and agriculture; health and nutrition; water and environment; and energy planning and development.
Nigeria remains committed to working with the IAEA, its Member States and other partners to promote the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology, strengthen nuclear safety and security, and enhance international cooperation for global development and shared prosperity.
