FIC Report (Kano State) – On November 15, 2024, the Kano State Government, under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, introduced transformative reforms in land administration to enhance efficiency and transparency. The initiatives, which include the complete renovation of the Kano State Geographic Information System (KANGIS) and the administrative block of the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning, mark a major step toward modernizing the state’s land management systems.
Governor Yusuf, in a statement through his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, described the reforms as a milestone for ensuring secure land records, protecting investments, and resolving disputes. A key component of the reforms is the recertification of Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O), aimed at creating accurate and tamper-proof land documentation. The Governor urged landowners to comply promptly with the process.
In his address, Yusuf criticized the previous administration for alleged corruption, mismanagement, and failures in urban planning. He committed to restoring order and sustainable development through a governance framework emphasizing accountability and innovation.
At the core of the reforms is a state-of-the-art Geographic Information System (GIS) designed to improve land management, streamline urban planning, enhance taxation systems, and eliminate revenue leakages. Measures also include banning inappropriate land allocations and establishing a State Task Force on Development Control to address urban challenges while preserving Kano’s cultural heritage.
Governor Yusuf also emphasized the significance of renovating KANGIS and the Ministry’s facilities, which are now equipped with advanced ICT infrastructure. This enhancement reflects the administration’s dedication to professionalism and improved service delivery.
The reforms signal a progressive step toward a sustainable and organized urban future for Kano State.
