The House of Representatives in Plenary on Wednesday March 11,2020 considered the need to investigate the influx of fake, sub-standard and counterfeit products in Nigeria.
The mover of the motion, Hon. Chike John noted that Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) vested with the powers to confiscate sub-standard or counterfeit products and also supervise as well as prosecute them is yet to live up to its mandate.
He further noted that the domestic market is flooded with all kinds of fake products including electrical appliances, building materials, and automobile parts which are either manufactured or imported into the Country.
The House is worried that these fake products endanger lives and create a disincentive to investment and in turn affect the economy as foreign investors are closing down because of their inability to compete with fake and sub-standard products in Nigeria.
Furthermore, he stated that the reoccurring tragedy of collapsed building in Nigeria is mostly linked to substandard materials used in building just as substandard or expired motor parts are responsible for vehicular accidents.
The House therefore mandated the Committee on Commerce, Industry, Information, National Orientation and Ethics and Values to invite the Hon. Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment to brief the Committee on the measures being taken to address the situation.
