The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, represented by QS Pemi Temitope, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s solidarity with children living with cancer and their families, describing collective action and early awareness as critical to addressing the challenges of childhood cancer.
Dr. Belgore stated this in his remarks at the 10th Annual Childhood Cancer Awareness Walk organized by the Okapi Children Cancer Foundation held in Abuja over the weekend
Commending the Foundation for sustaining the initiative for a decade, the Permanent Secretary said the 10th edition is a testament to dedication, resilience, and compassion towards children and families affected by cancer.
“Childhood is a precious stage of life, and every child deserves the opportunity to grow, to learn, to dream, and to fulfil his or her potential. When families are confronted with cancer, the physical, emotional, and financial challenges can be overwhelming,” Dr. Belgore said.
He noted that the awareness walk represents more than a physical exercise; it is a powerful expression of solidarity and a call to government, private organizations, civil society, and individuals to contribute towards greater awareness and support for those affected.
Dr. Belgore emphasized that while the core mandate of the Ministry centres on housing and urban development, sustainable national development is ultimately about improving the quality of life, well-being, dignity, and social inclusion of Nigerians.
He further noted that the event provided an opportunity for public servants and other participants to promote physical wellness, team spirit, and collective responsibility.
The Permanent Secretary commended the Okapi Children Cancer Foundation, its partners, volunteers, and supporters, and called on stakeholders to continue supporting initiatives that contribute to the treatment, care, and welfare of children living with cancer and their families.
He thereafter declared the 10th Annual Childhood Cancer Awareness Walk open, stating that every step taken symbolizes hope, compassion, and solidarity.
The Walk, which attracted participants from government MDAs, civil society organizations, development partners, and members of the public, is part of activities to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
