INEC, Edo Police Strengthen Partnership Ahead of 2027 General Election

FIC Report (Edo State) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Edo State Police Command have reaffirmed their commitment to working together to ensure peaceful, transparent and credible elections as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 General Election.

This commitment was highlighted on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, Hon. Obo Effanga, and his delegation to the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, at the State Police Headquarters.

Speaking during the meeting, Effanga said the visit was aimed at deepening the existing collaboration between INEC and the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in the areas of election security, voter confidence and the protection of democratic processes.

According to him, effective cooperation between electoral and security institutions remains essential to the successful conduct of elections and the sustenance of public trust in the country’s democracy.

The REC noted that INEC remains committed to partnering with security agencies to guarantee peaceful and orderly electoral exercises across Edo State, stressing that stronger inter-agency collaboration would contribute significantly to free, fair and credible elections.

In his response, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika commended INEC for its dedication to strengthening democracy through credible electoral processes. He described cooperation among key institutions as vital to safeguarding the integrity of elections.

Agbonika assured the commission of the command’s readiness to provide adequate security before, during and after elections, emphasizing that police personnel would remain professional, impartial and guided by the rule of law in the discharge of their responsibilities.

He further reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining a secure environment for voters, election officials and other stakeholders, thereby strengthening public confidence in democratic institutions.

The meeting ended with both parties expressing confidence that enhanced collaboration would further support the successful conduct of future elections in Edo State, particularly as the nation looks ahead to the 2027 General Election.
