FIC REPORT (KADUNA STATE) – The Kaduna State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and ensuring that citizens have access to quality, effective and accessible health services, particularly at the primary healthcare level.
The Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, stated this at the close-out ceremony of the Task Shifting and Task Sharing (TSTS) Project, an initiative designed to strengthen Primary Healthcare (PHC) services across the state.
Dr. Balarabe explained that the Kaduna State Government recognised early in the current administration that improving healthcare delivery required innovative approaches beyond conventional methods. She noted that the introduction of the TSTS initiative came at a critical time to complement the government’s efforts to improve the capacity and effectiveness of primary healthcare facilities.
According to the Deputy Governor, sustaining the gains of the programme requires continuous investment in the training and retraining of healthcare personnel to strengthen their knowledge, competencies and professional effectiveness.
She emphasised that the quality of healthcare services depends significantly on the competence and commitment of health workers, urging them to embrace continuous learning and consistently improve their professional skills to meet the healthcare needs of the population.
Dr. Balarabe further cautioned that the conclusion of the TSTS Project must not result in a decline in commitment, performance or service delivery at the primary healthcare centres covered by the initiative.
She stressed that while projects may come to an end, the responsibilities, systems and achievements they establish must be sustained.
The Deputy Governor therefore called on the Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Board to build on the successes recorded under the initiative, strengthen existing structures and ensure the continued implementation of the project’s interventions for improved healthcare outcomes.
She also commended Pathfinder International and Impact Catalysts for their support towards the implementation of the TSTS Project, acknowledging the importance of partnerships in strengthening healthcare systems and improving access to essential health services.
The TSTS Project was designed to demonstrate how task shifting and task sharing could strengthen the healthcare system beyond one-off training interventions. It adopted an integrated approach combining competency-based training, clinical mentorship, supportive supervision, routine performance monitoring, data utilisation and institutional strengthening.
The initiative covered 77 primary healthcare facilities across nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kaduna State, with the objective of improving healthcare workers’ competencies, strengthening service delivery and enhancing the overall performance of primary healthcare facilities.
The close-out ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on the project’s achievements and emphasise the importance of institutional ownership, sustained capacity development and effective monitoring in ensuring that the benefits of the intervention continue beyond the project’s lifespan.
The Kaduna State Government reiterated its determination to consolidate the gains of the initiative and pursue sustainable improvements in primary healthcare delivery as part of its broader commitment to the health and well-being of the people of Kaduna State.
