Kano State is poised to unlock its vast untapped solid mineral resources, with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf prioritizing their exploration and efficient utilization. According to Adamu Ibrahim Dabo, Anipr, MNGE, Director of Public Enlightenment, Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, this vision underscores the Governor’s commitment to transforming the sector into a major revenue-generating avenue while ensuring environmental sustainability.
Speaking during an interactive session on Monday with Professor Harriet Chiemeze, the Group Managing Director and CEO of Green Earth Group Ltd, Commissioner for Solid Mineral and Natural Resources, Alhaji Safiyanu Hamza, highlighted the administration’s resolve. He noted that the Governor’s establishment of the ministry is a testament to the state’s readiness to embrace sustainable mining practices and tackle dormant mining licenses that fuel artisanal mining and associated security challenges.
The Commissioner assured the visiting team of the ministry’s readiness to develop a joint action plan or memorandum of understanding to enhance the value chain within the sector. He also emphasized the need for environmentally friendly mining practices to ensure sustainable development.
Professor Harriet Chiemeze, a Kano-born engineer, expressed her company’s willingness to collaborate with the government, pledging to attract funding partners from China, America, and Switzerland, provided the state’s commitment aligns with the company’s goals.
Dr. Garba Ibrahim of Green Earth Group pointed out the low number of Kano indigenes studying geology and environmental sciences as a significant challenge to the sector’s growth. He urged the state government to invest in educational initiatives to address this gap.
During the visit, Director of Solid Minerals Exploration, Muhammad Bala, guided the delegation through the ministry’s mineral sample showcase, demonstrating the vast potential waiting to be harnessed.
The session was attended by the Commissioner, Permanent Secretary Engineer Mansur Yakubu, ministry directors, and senior staff, alongside members of the visiting delegation, including Professor Saminu Murtala Yakasai.
