The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba Lagos State. Prof Chris Bode has commended the Ecological Project Office(EPO) for the prompt intervention to upgrade and overhaul the sewage facility and avert environmental hazards at the teaching hospital. He said the intervention is one of the biggest ecological intervention efforts undertaken by EPO in the South-West zone of the country.
The CMD stated this during the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Project Office, Malam Shehu Ibrahim’s on-the- spot inspection of projects in Lagos including the 6km sewage pipeline facility at LUTH and the College of Medicine, Idi Araba.
Prof Bode further said that the intervention has saved the lives of over 10,000 Lagosians who use the facility. “It is a big think for us for the safety of all and Lagosians, the government has done well for LUTH”. This project is something we are very proud of, and you can also see the quality of job that is ongoing here”.
2) Sewage holding reservoir
“This is one of the biggest project undertaken by EPO in South-Western Nigeria, over 10,000 people use this facility. We are proud to serve Nigeria and with this impetus, we will serve Nigeria better”. He thanked the Federal Government and EPO for making the project a reality and thus alleviating the living standards of the people.
Speaking during the inspection, the Permanent Secretary, Malam Ibrahim commended the progress of work done and expressed optimism that the project will ameliorate the sewage problems at the University Hospital.
“This project is something we are very proud of, and you can also see the quality of job that is ongoing here. Anybody that has gone round this facility will really appreciate what the Federal Government is doing in communities”.
The Permanent Secretary promised to consider other areas of intervention as the need may arise and subject to availability of funds as that is a major challenge to government in its determined efforts of interventions.
“However, our major challenge is fund, what we have and the level of intervention will depend on the fund available to us”, adding that the EPO is always desirous to attend to every request except that the resources are not always enough to address every request.
Malam Ibrahim commended the contractor on the progress and quality of work done and in meeting the specifications and timelines for completion of the project. He said the installation of the treatment plant expected to in the next two to three weeks, being the last aspect of the project circle will roll out the complete plan for the sewage treatment facility at the University Hospital.
The Permanent Secretary was accompanied on the inspection tour by EPO Directors including; Director of Pollution Control, Clinton Iqwe; Director, Soil Erosion and Flood Control, Abubakar Takuma; Director, Special Duties, Yakubu Habu; Director, Drought, Desertification and Coastal Zone Management, Haruna Bello and Director II, Pollution Control, Simon Tyungu.
