FIC Report (Enugu State) – The newly rehabilitated National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Awgu has officially reopened after months of closure, marking a significant boost for youth development and national service in Enugu State.
The reopening follows an extensive infrastructural upgrade led by Governor Peter Mbah, which transformed the once dilapidated facility into a modern orientation camp.
Welcoming corps members during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch A Stream II, the Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, praised the governor’s intervention, describing it as a turning point for both the NYSC scheme and the host community.
He said the transformation reflects “visionary leadership and bold infrastructural strides,” noting that the administration’s efforts are repositioning Enugu as a hub of development.
The camp, previously shut down due to severe infrastructural decay, has been upgraded with a 2,000-capacity multipurpose hall, 500-capacity hostels, new staff quarters, a solar-powered borehole system, and improved access roads fitted with solar streetlights.
Okolo described the project as a strategic investment in youth empowerment and grassroots economic growth, adding that it would significantly enhance the socio-economic profile of Awgu and surrounding communities.
He also reassured corps members of their safety during the orientation exercise.
The swearing-in ceremony attracted government officials, traditional rulers, and NYSC authorities. Representing the governor, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu, urged corps members to approach their service year with dedication and purpose.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to their welfare, stressing that the camp’s upgrade reflects a broader vision of dignity, comfort, and opportunity for young Nigerians.
The camp’s reconstruction was initiated after concerns raised by the Enugu State NYSC Coordinator, Oluwakemi Awolola, over the facility’s deteriorating condition. Governor Mbah subsequently approved a comprehensive redevelopment plan that has delivered major improvements in infrastructure, accessibility, and security.
Further upgrades are ongoing, including additional hostel blocks, a proposed 5,000-capacity multipurpose hall, and plans for a standard parade and sports field.
With the reopening, the new batch of corps members has been formally inducted into the one-year national service programme, setting the stage for community development and national integration.
