In a significant development for Nigeria’s cultural tourism sector, traditional leaders from Igbo-speaking states converged on the office of the Honorable Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John, on May 8th, 2024. Led by HRH Igwe Dr. Christian N. Nwajagu JP of Akpugoeze, Enugu State, the delegation presented an address underscoring the importance of revitalizing the Iri Ji Ndi Igbo National Yam Festival and promoting local tourism.
Acknowledging the delegation’s concerns, Minister Ade-John reiterated her commitment to focusing on local tourism and community development initiatives. She emphasized the need to harness Nigeria’s untapped cultural tourism potentials and acknowledged the significance of the Iri Ji Ndi Igbo National Yam Festival in the country’s cultural landscape.
During the engagement, Minister Ade-John assured the delegation of her support and announced plans to establish a National Committee dedicated to showcasing the festival annually. Additionally, she pledged support towards the development and promotion of the festival.
The Minister’s proactive approach to promoting cultural tourism and community development resonated with the traditional leaders, who expressed their willingness to collaborate closely with her ministry. The delegation welcomed Minister Ade-John’s assurance to visit the tourist sites and her commitment to working together to revitalize Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
