FIC REPORT (PLATEAU STATE) – In a move to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary and reaffirm his administration’s commitment to peace and inclusive development, Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has felicitated Nigerians at home and abroad while granting absolute pardon to 130 inmates and reducing the sentences of four others serving death sentences to life imprisonment.
In a goodwill message issued to commemorate the anniversary on the 1st october, 2026, Governor Mutfwang called on Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of past generations and remain committed to building a united, peaceful and prosperous nation.
The Governor stressed the importance of preserving Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that nation-building requires the collective efforts of citizens across generations. He urged Plateau residents to continue contributing to the development of the state and country despite prevailing challenges.
Mutfwang also acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in promoting national unity, stability and economic development, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to creating a peaceful and secure Plateau where citizens can pursue their aspirations.
As part of the anniversary observance, the Governor exercised the constitutional prerogative of mercy after consultation with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. The exercise resulted in 130 inmates receiving absolute pardon, while four inmates had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
The Governor commended the people of Plateau State for their resilience, patriotism and contributions to national development, urging them to sustain their faith in Nigeria and work towards a better future.
He wished Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora a peaceful and meaningful 66th Independence Anniversary.
