Nigeria And Turkiye Sign Strategic MOU To Strengthen Family Cohesion And Social Welfare

Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and Turkish Minister of Family and Social Services, Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to transform social development and family welfare.

The MoU was signed on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 in Ankara -Turkiye by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim fsi who is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Official State visit to the country.

The Minister Imaan Ibrahim in her remarks at the ceremony said that MoU is the culmination of a year-long engagement and aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda even as She emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to working “faster and smarter” to reach a target of positively impacting 50 million citizens by 2030.

According to her, core Provisions of the MoU include:

  • Strengthening Families: Facilitating Nigeria’s first National Action Plan on Families by year-end, with the Care Economy as a critical pillar to support family structures.
  • Empowering Women: Promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening socio-economic status, and establishing mentoring mechanisms to foster solidarity.
  • Protecting Children: Developing holistic protection systems and early intervention mechanisms to prevent neglect and abuse.
  • Inclusion of Vulnerable Groups: Ensuring full social participation for persons with disabilities and promoting “active aging” for senior citizens.

Speaking further, the Minister said the MoU is a sacred pact to prioritize the family as the engine of national prosperity adding that both nations will immediately begin exchanging experts and best practices to ensure these social protections deliver tangible results for every household.
