The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), under the leadership of the Executive Secretary, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting today in Abuja to deliberate and strategize on Nigeria’s national commitments ahead of the 2025 Global Disability Summit (GDS) scheduled to take place in Germany.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders from government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), and other relevant sectors to chart a comprehensive roadmap for promoting the rights, inclusion, and well-being of persons with disabilities in Nigeria. A strategic working plan was developed, which will form the basis of Nigeria’s commitments to be presented at the Global Summit.
In his opening address, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan highlighted the importance of the Global Disability Summit as a vital international platform that enables countries to assess progress, renew commitments, and foster global partnerships for the advancement of disability rights.
“The Global Disability Summit is not just an event; it is a platform where nations reaffirm their dedication to the principles of inclusion, accessibility, and equal participation for persons with disabilities. It provides an opportunity to reflect on our achievements, identify existing gaps, and strengthen partnerships that will drive sustainable change,” Hon. Gufwan stated.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s progress since the inaugural Global Disability Summit held in 2018 in the United Kingdom, the Executive Secretary commended the Federal Government for enacting the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which led to the establishment of the NCPWD. He acknowledged the pivotal role played by development partners, including Sightsavers, CBM Global Disability Inclusion, and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, whose support has been instrumental in the Commission’s ability to fulfill its mandate.
Representing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chairman of the House Committee on Disability Matters, Hon. Daudu Bashir, lauded the efforts of the NCPWD and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for creating a platform where stakeholders can engage in meaningful dialogue to shape Nigeria’s national agenda for disability inclusion.
“It is imperative for Nigeria to approach the 2025 Global Disability Summit with a clear and unified vision. Caring for persons with disabilities is not merely an act of charity; it is a fundamental human right and an obligation of any just society. It speaks to the restoration and preservation of human dignity, which is central to national development,” Hon. Bashir remarked.
He reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to enacting and supporting policies that promote the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, ensuring their full participation in all aspects of national life.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Global Disability Summit, this strategic stakeholders’ meeting marks a significant step in defining the country’s priorities and reinforcing its commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and accessible society for all.
