Nigeria’s Future Depends on Ethical Leadership, SGF Declares at BPSR Summit

The Federal Government has called on national stakeholders to recommit to ethical leadership, institutional reforms, and long-term nation-building.

It said Nigeria has reached a defining moment where deliberate action is urgently required to safeguard the country’s future.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who was represented by Ikyenge Tyokase Francis, Director, SGF Main Office, made the appeal on Thursday at the National Legacy Summit and Awards Night.

The event was jointly organised by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR) and the Advocacy for Good Ethics and Accountability for Development.

He described the summit as a strategic platform that brings together leaders, policymakers, innovators and thinkers to reflect on the values and systems that must be strengthened for the benefit of future generations.

According to him, a national legacy is built through intentional reforms, ethical governance, strategic innovation and sustained investment in people and institutions.

He commended BPSR and its partners for sustaining conversations centred on national innovation, leadership excellence, accountability and inter-generational equity.

The SGF urged participants to interrogate ideas, exchange solutions and build partnerships capable of shaping reforms and influencing the country’s development trajectory.

He stressed that the nation’s future depends on the quality of legacies deliberately cultivated today.

In his opening remarks, the Director-General of BPSR, Mr. Dasuki Arabi, reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s institutional culture and national character through sustained reform programmes.

He said the summit was designed to offer a platform for the exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas that would guide Nigeria towards a more sustainable and accountable future.

Arabi noted that the goal is to inspire practical strategies that improve governance, enhance citizen engagement and reinforce shared values across society.

The DG also highlighted the importance of youth participation, describing young leaders as central to the reforms that will shape Nigeria’s legacy in the years ahead.

He expressed appreciation to development partners and stakeholders, especially the Advocacy for Good Ethics and Accountability for Development, for their support in promoting transparency, ethics and accountability in the public service.

The summit featured plenary sessions, panel discussions and interactive workshops focused on advancing reform-driven and values-based national development.
