FIC Report (Imo State) – The NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS)/Seplat Energy Joint Venture has reaffirmed its commitment to educational advancement and youth development through the successful hosting of the 2026 PEARLs Quiz and STEAM Competition Grand Finale in Owerri, Imo State.
The annual academic competition, designed for secondary school students within the company’s operational areas, is aimed at promoting academic excellence, innovation, critical thinking, and improving the standard of education among young Nigerians.
Speaking at the event, the Director of External Affairs and Social Performance, Seplat Energy Plc, Mrs. Chioma Afe, described the programme as a celebration of intellect, discipline, perseverance, confidence, curiosity, and the limitless potential of young people.
She explained that the PEARLs Quiz was developed following extensive assessments which identified education as a critical area requiring sustained intervention within host communities. According to her, the initiative was specifically designed to encourage academic rigor, sharpen intellectual capacity, and prepare students to apply knowledge to practical, real-life situations.
Mrs. Afe further noted that the programme complements other educational initiatives of the joint venture, including the Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme and the Science Innovators Programme, all geared towards strengthening educational development and creating long-term impact within host communities.
She disclosed that this year’s edition recorded participation from over 200 secondary schools across Imo State, with students undergoing rigorous qualifying stages before progressing to the live quiz competition and STEAM exhibition.
Representing the Acting Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NUIMS, Mr. Olanrewaju Igandan, the Lead Community Relations Officer, Mr. Minanengiyeofori Loveday, described the competition as a reflection of the commitment of NUIMS and Seplat Energy towards investing in the future of young Nigerians through education and intellectual development.
He encouraged participating students to value the knowledge, exposure, and relationships gained through the competition beyond the material rewards attached to it.
Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by the Commissioner for Petroleum Resources, Barr. Emeka Mgbudem, commended the NNPC/Seplat Joint Venture for sustaining programmes that continue to positively impact education, healthcare, and youth development in Imo State.
The Commissioner also acknowledged the joint venture’s wider contributions to the state, particularly in healthcare and community welfare, including the construction of a major infectious disease hospital and the implementation of several social intervention programmes across communities.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Niger Delta Affairs and Intelligence, Dr. Henry Okafor, praised the students, parents, and organisers for the impressive display of intellectual excellence, noting that the competition reflected the high academic potential and creativity of students in the state.
The grand finale attracted government officials, community leaders, educators, regulators, parents, and students from across Imo State.
At the end of the competition, Mountain Crest High School emerged overall winner of the PEARLs Quiz Competition and received a project-based grant of N5 million, alongside scholarship grants for participating students and a laptop for the teacher.
Owerri City Secondary School secured second position with a project grant of N3 million, while Eziachi Secondary School, Orlu, emerged third with a grant of N1 million. Christ the King College placed fourth and also received recognition for participation.
The event also featured the STEM Innovation Project segment where schools showcased innovative and problem-solving projects developed by students. PAC College emerged overall winner of the STEM Innovation category, while St. Theresa College and Urban College emerged second and third respectively.
Participating students expressed appreciation to the organisers for providing a platform that encourages innovation, academic excellence, and personal development among young people.
The event further highlighted the commitment of the NNPC/Seplat Joint Venture towards empowering students, promoting innovation, and supporting educational transformation within host communities and beyond.
