Oba of Benin Raises Concern Over Global Tensions, Reflects on U.S. Security Presence in Nigeria

FIC Report (Edo State) – Oba Ewuare II has expressed concern over rising global tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, warning about the implications of conflicts driven by power consolidation across the world.

The monarch made the remarks when the newly deployed 4 Brigade Commander of the Nigerian Army in Benin, Ahmed Balogun, paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday March 5 2026 at his palace in Benin City.

During the meeting, Oba Ewuare II reflected on the presence of American security forces in Nigeria, noting that U.S. troops are assisting Nigerian forces in tackling insurgency in parts of the country. He offered prayers for the safety of both Nigerian and American troops engaged in security operations.

The monarch, who previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Scandinavian countries and Italy before ascending the throne, also pledged the continued support of traditional institutions to security agencies defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Earlier, Major-General Balogun said his visit was to formally inform the Benin monarch of his deployment to the 4 Brigade Command and to seek prayers and royal blessings to enable him carry out his duties effectively.

He noted that the Nigerian Army values the support of traditional institutions, stressing that acknowledging such support was part of the reason for the visit to the Benin Palace.

Balogun also highlighted the historical affinity between the Benin Kingdom and the Yoruba people, adding that he had long admired the Benin throne from his school days.

The brigade commander further commended Oba Ewuare II for the encouragement and support he has extended to senior military officers since his assumption of duty in Benin.

Also on the same day, the Benin monarch received the Assistant Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Zone G, Josephine Ogbefun, alongside members of her management team, who visited the palace to solicit prayers and support.

During the visit, the Obasogie of Benin, Chief George Igiemwin Ekhator, offered prayers on behalf of the palace for the success of the officers in their respective responsibilities.
