Onu Commends Head of Service on Peer Review

ABUJA (Ministry of Science & Technology Report) – The Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu has commended the Peer Review Mechanism introduced by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita towards repositioning the service and improving productivity.

Ogbonnaya Onu, who made the commendation when the Peer Review Team led by Winifred Oyo-Ita paid him a courtesy call at the weekend in Abuja further said that the Peer Review Mechanism was in line with the Transformation Agenda as it embraces the security, economic and anti-Corruption Agenda of the present administration. He stressed the need for a first class Civil Service that would assist the President in implementing projects and programmes of the administration, adding that the reform put in place by the Head of Service has helped to improve the services being rendered to the nation.

He expressed the longing for Nigeria to be a great nation and the determination to achieve this through hard work, indicating the strong belief that this cannot be done without the Civil Service.

The Minister also praised the league of Permanent Secretaries, noting that they have important roles to play in ensuring that the main programmes of this administration are realised. He lauded the Directors in the Ministry for their contributions to the success of the various policies and guidelines aimed at redirecting the Nigerian economy from being resource – based to a knowledge and innovation-driven one that would put Nigeria among the top nations of the world.

Speaking earlier, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita disclosed that the Peer Review Team is a body of Federal Permanent Secretaries which has the mandate to discuss, share experiences and address the challenges and operations of the Ministries to provide a vibrant Civil Service for the country.

“The League also compares notes and streamlines their operations in line with the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) of the present government as well as the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP), thereby enhancing improved service delivery,” she said.

“The report of the Peer Review Reform will be discussed at the service – wide meeting of the Federal Permanent Secretaries and would eventually be forwarded to the Federal Executive Council towards ensuring effective service delivery for the entire Public Service.”

Oyo-Ita hinted that the Nigerian President is very much interested in service delivery and a governance system that is citizen-centred. She avowed that the President is also committed to tacking economic issues in government as well as security matters, just as the Civil Service is the bedrock for launching out in terms of performance in all the critical areas identified by this administration.
