Onyinyechi Mark sets a new world record today in the women’s 61kg para powerlifting to win Nigeria first gold medal at Paris Paralympic Games.
She lifted 150kg in the 61kg Women’s Power lifting Category to beat her close opponent Chinese Cui Jianjin who lifted 140kg to clinch the silver medal.
Team Nigeria camp was thrown agog as she smashed World record three times in this event from 146kg, 147kg, and now 150kg
The Minister of Sports Development, Sen.John Owan Enoh, expressed profound pride and joy at Onyinyechi Mark’s historic win. In a heartfelt message, he lauded her exceptional performance, stating, “Today, you have proudly represented our nation by securing Nigeria’s first Olympic Gold medal at the Paralympics. Breaking the Paralympics record with a 147kg lift to claim Gold and then surpassing expectations by lifting 150kg to set a new world record is truly remarkable.”

He charged the athletes to go for more victory as the momentum is higher and Nigerians are happy with them.
Nigeria Para athletes have consistently remain a dominant force in their games and have never dissapointed in any of their outings.
With today’s victory, a total of three medals, one gold, one silver and one bronze have been won in different events and categories with hope still high for more medals as three time Paralympic gold medalist Lucy Ejike begins her quest today for medal.
